This past year, I experienced a very stressful situation after my father was diagnosed with advanced cancer. Everything in my life was turned upside down, and I hadn’t even had the opportunity to sort out my emotions. My mental state was in total chaos with the series of surprises related to my father’s illness.
What is depression ?
Depression can be presented as a mental illness or desorder where people start feeling sadness for a prolonged period, and feeling desinterest about everything in their life. This feeling is associated with different symptoms and alterations of thought and behaviour. People of all ages can be concerned by depression even children. The severity can widely vary and can also last a lifetime, or be temporary.
Physical early symptoms of depression:
Then one day, I realized I had physical symptoms that weren’t reassuring:
- More pronounced hair loss
- Large pimples appearing all over my body
- Sleeping desorders
- Weight or appetite changes
- Digestive issues
- My immunity was gradually weakening, and I wasn’t recovering quickly from a simple cold.
That’s when I decided to dot the i’s and cross the t’s. I was stressing even more as I saw these symptoms multiply day after day. I did some research and asked my friends for their opinions, and it was clear: signs of the onset of depression.
Psychological early signs of depression :
As it’s known, depression can look very different from person to person. Some symptoms are clearly recognised, while others are not easy to see and may be really hidden. subtle and easy to miss. Recognising both the obvious and hidden signs is key to early intervention and effective treatment.
Most of the symptoms touch the way you feel and think :
- Social isolation, you no interest in meeting friends or new people
- Low self confidence
- Feeling of sadness or hopelessness *
- Memory issues, you can not concentrate *
- More pessimist vision over anything
- Lack of taking care of oneself, including the hygiene
- Drugs and bad substances addiction
- Reckless or escapist behaviour like gambling, risky sex, or excessive spending
- Disinterest in daily activities, work or relationships
- Procrastination and lazy attitude.

Auto managing of the signs of depression:
I realized then that it was time to act. I had to stop feeding this depression so that it would go away. So I decided to start by doing some things by myself by especially concentrating on some lifestyle adjustments, and see if it can help :
- Maintaining my workouts.
- Set a healthy diet and a good sleep schedule.
- Managing my breathing during stressful situations or crises: Breathe well to avoid destructive anger as much as possible.
- Doing a favorite activity from time to time to relieve stress and forget about myself a little. The most important is to join as much as possible enjoyable activities.
- Meeting friends or loved ones and going out to share and laugh.
- Taking care of my body for mental well-being.
- Try to express my feelings in different ways, like painting, singing, writing and adding dance sessions to let off steam and release negative energy.

If all the personal despression treatments don’t hepl, then it becomes necessy to seek help from a professional and start by therapeutic methods that help people understand and espress their feelings, behaviors and thoughts. Each individual can have a specific approach according to it’s special case.
Medication
Medicines can be very effective in some cases, because it helps to manage some feelings in order to overcome the depression or just reduce the symptoms.
